Intro to Kambo
Kambo is a traditional Amazonian practice involving the application of the secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor, commonly known as the giant monkey frog. The secretion is applied to small superficial points on the skin, allowing bioactive peptides to enter the lymphatic system. While the experience is non-psychoactive, it can be physically and emotionally intense, and is approached with preparation, screening, and guided support. Kambo is not appropriate for everyone and should always be approached responsibly.
Bioactive Peptides
Peer-reviewed research identifies various peptides in Kambo that interact with human physiology in specific ways:
-
Dermorphin - interacts with opioid receptors and is associated with pain modulation
-
Deltorphin - affects the nervous system and may influence mood and perception
-
Phyllocaerulein - influences smooth muscle contraction and digestive activity
-
Phyllomedusin - associated with vascular and gastrointestinal responses. These compounds contribute to the physiological responses experienced during a session.

An In-Depth Guide
Traditional Context
Kambo has been used for generations by Indigenous Amazonian tribes, including the Matsés and the Kaxinawá. Traditionally, it has been applied in structured settings for both physical and energetic purposes, often before hunting or significant events. While modern use has evolved, it is important to approach this work with respect for its origins, and with an understanding that it is not simply a wellness trend, but a practice rooted in culture and tradition.
Preparation
Preparation is an important part of this work. Clients receive detailed guidance prior to their session, including hydration, dietary considerations, and timing of substances or medications. All new clients complete a consultation and intake process to determine whether Kambo is appropriate and safe for them.
Safety
Kambo is safe when managed by a qualified practitioner. Kambo is not suitable for everyone. A full screening process is required prior to participation.
Understanding the Session
A Kambo session is structured and guided, with attention to preparation, timing, and individual response. After preparation, small superficial points are created on the skin, and the Kambo secretion is applied. The experience typically unfolds in waves and may include: increased heart rate, flushing or heat, purging (vomiting), sweating, and emotional release.
These effects are generally short-lived, often lasting 15–30 minutes, followed by a period of rest and recovery. Each session is approached with care and is never rushed. The experience is brief but often intense, and is supported throughout with guidance and monitoring.
